Facebook finally admitted that organic reach is WAY down for brands/business pages and will continue to drop because they want to encourage you to start forking out some cash and pay for ads. Reasonable since after all they are a business that needs to make money.
Facebook is still an AMAZING marketing tool…but only IF you really know what you’re doing and now more than ever you REALLY need to know what you are doing. So, I want to make recommendation on what you can start doing in order to maximize your results.
Now if you are not up to speed on this issue, here it is in a nutshell: Facebook doesn’t show all of your posts to all of your fans. Only a small percentage of your fans actually get to see what you post. This may still come as a surprise to many business owners. But here’s the key…you can get a much higher percentage of your fans to see your posts if they are highly “engaged” with the content you offer.
Here are several tips…
1. Don’t post as many links. I see many pages that have link post after link post after link post. It’s too much. You need variety. Post questions, status updates, tips, photos, and links with photos instead of just the direct link. This will help you get better reach with your fans. Ultimately Facebook wants their fans to stay on Facebook.
2. Increase the number of posts per day. Currently I am posting just about every hour. This can get overwhelming for some, but the more you post the better your engagement will be. Now, with that said…you need to post valuable content that your fans and audience want. That has always been the case no matter what, so make sure you know what they want. I recommend posting 6 times per day.
3. Invest in a social media dashboard service. My favorite is Sprout Social. This will help you plan in advance and avoid neglecting your audience. As soon as you stop posting on a consistent basis your reach and engagement plummets to it’s death. This leads to my next bit of advice.
4. Be consistent. This is SO IMPORTANT. You must be consistent every single day. People are not going to engage with you if you only post now and again. Think about it, you have a great friend but eh, you only check in with them when you have time or when you feel like it. How close do you think you will be with that friend? Probably not very much unless they are used to being dumped on. Be consistent and show your fans loyalty.
5. Hire a social media agency. If you don’t have the time to learn how this all works (and most business owners don’t) and you have the means to hire an agency, I highly recommend it. This is what my team and I do. The cost is $16 per day for our gold package and $34 per day for our platinum package. That is amazing! 6. Instead of boosting posts, place a $1 a day ad. Start experimenting with ads. Upload 3-6 photos that speak to what you offer. (Remember only 20% text is allowed on your images) Then run your ad for one month for a $1.00 a day. See how many more fans you acquire and how many more eyes see your business page that normally would not have. You can’t market anywhere for this little.
7. Set up tab apps and generate leads. This will help you capture emails of new leads as well as drive traffic to your other social sites, websites, blog, videos and more. They are relatively easy to install for people that are fairly technically inclined and can do wonders for generating not only more Facebook fans, but also more leads for your business. This is also something we set up and help our clients with. You most definitely want to incorporate lead generation into your business strategy.
8. Spend time on other social networks. It is very important to diversify and learn how other networks will work for your specific business. Each network is very different. You will want to explore: Twitter, Google +, Pinterest, Instagram, Linkedin, Tumblr, Vine and others in order to see which ones will work for your business. You definitely do not want to put all your social marketing eggs into one basket. If something changes like it did with Facebook you are going to be sh** out of luck and this happened to many businesses last year. Make sure you use more than one social media network to market and position yourself.
9. Start social ‘networking’ instead of always social ‘marketing’. Social Media is all about being SOCIAL. It’s literally right there in the name! It’s all about being social with other people, businesses, brands, public figures etc. AND, it’s fun. I find all sorts of new people day in and day out to speak to and connect with. These folks then sign up to receive my weekly updates, they read my blog posts, they connect with me on multiple social channels, they partner with me to create win-win joint ventures and guess what they even become my client. This is how it works.
10. Learn, learn, and continue to learn. There is so much to learn in this field. I do this for a living and I am still learning everyday. Business requires constant learning and so does social media marketing. You can’t truly compete if you are not continuing to grow as a person (business owner).
Remember that social media is here to stay. This is NOT a fad. The Internet and World Wide Web is becoming the World Wide Social Web. So, learn to embrace it…learn as much as you can about social marketing and consult an expert to learn even faster. You will be glad you did and it will pay you back in dividends.
At the end of the day, curve balls (sometimes-big ones) will be thrown your way in your business. Facebook has thrown a pretty big one, but the cream rises to the top. It always does. So, if you want to be the best parts of the milk…start rising.
